Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be extracted. They are the backbone of the iron and steel industry.

Types of Iron Ores:

Hematite: Known for its deep red colour and high iron content, hematite is the most abundant and widely mined iron ore.

Magnetite: This black-coloured ore possesses magnetic properties and is valued for its high iron content.

Limonite: Commonly found as yellow-brown deposits, limonite ores often contain hydrated iron oxides.

Geographical Distribution:

Australia: Renowned for its vast iron ore reserves, Australia is a leading exporter to the global market.

Brazil: Home to the world's second-largest iron ore reserves, Brazil plays a significant role in the industry.

China: As the largest producer and consumer of iron ore, China influences global iron ore prices and trade patterns.

Iron ore specifications are important parameters that define the quality and suitability of the ore for various applications. These specifications provide crucial information about the iron content, impurities, physical properties, and other characteristics of the ore. Here are some key aspects to consider when discussing iron ore specifications:

Iron Content: The iron content is typically expressed as a percentage and is a primary indicator of the ore's value. Higher iron content generally translates to higher quality and price. The iron content can range from several tens of percent to over 65% in high-grade ores.

Impurities: Iron ore may contain impurities that need to be minimized or removed during processing. Common impurities include silica, alumina, phosphorus, sulfur, and trace elements like titanium, manganese, and chromium. Low levels of impurities are desirable, as they can affect the efficiency of iron and steel production processes.

Moisture Content: Moisture content refers to the amount of water present in the ore. Excess moisture can lead to handling and transportation challenges, as well as affect the efficiency of downstream processes. Iron ore with lower moisture content is generally preferred.
